Road Trip!

We took a road trip to St. Louis for the weekend. Let's just say, I can't believe we haven't gone there sooner. It is an awesome and accessible city to visit. I know this won't be our last visit. We hadn't even crossed the Mississippi back into Illinois when the girls were asking how soon we could return.

With a statement like that, you would think that we saw a lot of the city and/or it's museums, zoo, galleries, waterfront, etc. But, in fact, we didn't. We spent all day Saturday at the City Museum. And, that is the real reason the girls would like to return. I, on the other hand, know that there is much more to explore there.

The City Museum is hardly a museum. In fact, it's more like a giant playground for children and adults alike. It has 10-story slides, mousetrap-like climbing areas, rope swings, tree houses and caves. I learned a lot about myself that day. For instance, I am very uncomfortable in high places. And, I don't like going in to small spaces in which I am unsure of the way out. In other words, I'm a little claustrophobic.  In describing this place to friends the following week, I knew I wasn't alone. They were squirming in their seats just to hear about these tight places we climbed through.

Here are some images (Photo Project 2012 - Day 230) of our day at the museum:

We started in the outdoor area at ground level. Obviously, you don't stay on the ground. We climbed up lots of cages to get to the suspended plane and bus. Some of areas were tall catwalks while other sections required going through tubes like the one above.

We made our way to the roof, where Annalee climbed a 10-story caged tube where she was greeted by a praying mantis. From there, we slid down the 10-story slide.

Underneath the top of the 10-story slide was this domed structure that people could climb up and into. It also housed a very long rope swing that Zelda enjoyed swinging from.

Back inside on the first level, we crawled through lots of tubes. The one of me above was just the start. Once I got to the area where Annalee was (middle picture) I turned around and went back out the way I came in. I was just too freaked out that I wouldn't be able to get through.

In addition to the day-long museum visit, we had another reason to visit St. Louis. Actually, it was the reason we went to St. Louis at all. We went to pick out our two new Tonkinese kittens. Our breeder lives just west of St. Louis; we had met her at a cat show in Palatine in the winter. Her cats had born three litters between April and May. We waited the 16 weeks until they were available and made the road trip to get them. Since we were her first deposit for kittens, we had pick of the litters.

Tonkinese come in four colors and three coat patterns, making a total of 12 variations. We knew we wanted a male and a female, and we wanted to cats that we would be able to easily tell apart. Our breeder had three males that were platinum minks, so we knew what our boy would look like, in general. She had two females that were points - lighter body with a dark face, ears, paws and tail. It was just going to be a matter of selecting our kittens from the five she had that met our criteria. And, we wanted kittens with a friendly, playful disposition that would love the girls.

We drove straight from our home to our breeder's in Chesterfield, Mo., so we could see all the kittens and make our selection. We spent nearly two hours with her kittens, first choosing ours and then playing with some additional kittens that our breeder was keeping for her own from those new litters. We even got to hold a two-week-old kitten.

We returned to her house on Sunday morning after a quick stop at the local pet store for supplies. We had not come up with any names for the kittens - that would take an additional four days of work. In the end, we decided to name the girl Portia (she is the pointed kitten) and the boy Cinna (all cream/gray). For anyone who has read The Hunger Games, you should recognize the pairing. Naming options came down to those two and Dasher and Vixen. As one friend said, they're unusual cats, they should have unusual names. And, so they do.

A Trip South (Photo Project 2012 - Days 157 to 164

On June 5, I took the girls to visit Ron's family in North Carolina.

Day 157

Tuesday, June 5 was a lovely day for flying south.

Day 158

The girls loved sleeping in the king-sized bed. Here they are reading before going to sleep.

Day 159

Ron's brother, Reid, raises chickens, so the eggs we eat are as fresh as can be. The color of the yolk is almost startlingly orange.

We timed our trip to celebrate Grandpa Ronnie's 74th birthday with him (and Carole).

Day 160

Annalee outside in the glow of the setting sun.

Day 161

Zelda along with Uncle Reid.

Day 162

We headed down to Kill Devil Hills, N.C., on the Outer Banks for a night (and day). On our way to the beach, we stopped for dinner at Frog Island, where the girls were nearly attacked by a giant crab!

We arrived on the beach just after the sun set. It didn't stop the girls from searching for shells in the sand (and getting bitten by sand fleas).

Day 163

Our main reason for going to the beach during this trip was to visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial just up the road from Ronnie's beach house. The park service hosted a kite-flying activity for children. Despite the sweltering heat and very little wind, the girls flew their kites up and down the field in front of the Wright Brothers Memorial.

Day 163

I baked a most delicious and beautiful (if I do say so myself!) chocolate layer cake for my birthday.  We celebrated with a swim and cookout at Carole's house on Bell's Island.

Day 164

Before leaving for the airport on our final day in North Carolina, the girls gave Grandpa Ronnie an early Father's Day gift.

Photo Project 2012 - Days 27 to 36

Days 27 through 36 were taken during our family vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We had an incredibly fun time, just the four of us.

Day 27

Is it ever possible to take a picture that contains a complete dinosaur skeleton AND allows you to see the people you're photographing in front of it? I don't think so. In any case, here are the girls at O'Hare International Airport in front of a brachiosaurus.

Day 28

This was the beauty that we awoke to on our first full day in Mexico. I could stare at this image for hours on end.

The day only got better. After a day on the beach and swimming in the pool and visiting with friends made in years past, I kicked up my feet and took in the fresh air and sounds of the waves, laughter and music.

Day 29

Zelda and Tubby after a busy day on the beach.

Day 30

The girls and I always take a picture of our feet on the beach. This year, we forgot to do it the first two days. Then, Annalee came down with the stomach flu and wasn't going to the beach our third day. So, we got her to hang her foot over the bed to take the picture. I was worried their polish would be worn off if we waited much longer.

Does this picture really require a caption?

Day 31

My beautiful Annalee.

The girls, with sand toys and and towel clips in hand, get ready for play time on the beach.

Day 32

For two days, it seemed like every pelican within a hundred miles had decided to hang out at our beach. I even got pooped on while laying on my lounge chair. Turns out there was a run of sardines that the pelicans were after. Once they finished those, they cleared out.

Day 33

One afternoon, Ron and his little sidekick challenged Annalee to a Pokemon game. Annalee always picks the best cards and never quite tells you all the rules, so you can guess who won.

Just before we went out to dinner, I turned back into the room. I just loved the way the light and the breeze were caught in the sheers.

Day 34

Zelda got the stomach flu while she was sleeping. Tubby took the brunt of the effect. So, the next morning we hung him out to dry. At least he had a great view of the beach.

The girls pose as we get ready to leave for dinner.

Later that evening, we visited with Miguel, the hotel's resident finger-painter. Annalee bought a hand-painted tile she designed herself and Zelda designed a finger-painted rock.

Day 35

The sun peaks over the mountain and shines on the palm trees around 8 a.m.; it finally hits the beach by about 10 a.m. That doesn't keep people from setting up their chairs early to get the best spot on the beach.

For our last full day in Puerto Vallarta, the girls put on quite a show for the shutter. Above, Zelda just pretends to be sleeping. God forbid she might miss one minute of excitement!

Below, my future dress designer makes the most of my beach wrap.

Day 36

Despite the sadness of flying home from a spectacular beach vacation, we enjoyed a lovely sunset.
